this video- blessed is the spot- is of the bahai faith

the bahai temple is very facenating i really like how everyone can go sit down relax and pray or meditate. also the way the building was structures really coraltes with the religion itself. if you count the beams that support the dome yo will notice that htere are 9 of them. 9 is a special number to the bahais to them it means completeness. also there are many other religious symbols that relate to other forms of religions. the garden is also wonderful. i kind of find it wierd how they place all the prophet including jesus all in relation i know many other religion do this but it is a very hard idea to grasp. couple other facinating things i would have never expect a frech architech and the fact tat it took over 50 year to complete. but it understandable if they are only collecting from other bahais. this was one of my favorable religions that we discussed in class we definitely saved the best for last

the final visual blog CATHOLICISM

This blog will be a preview of the system of symbols that are represented in the catholic church that creates meaning to all that follow Catholicism.

This video is of a priest conveying his message to the world and the people that follow the catholic religion. The video isn't meant for the visual symbols but instead the symbols are through his words.

TRINITY- the trinity consist of the the Father, Son and Holy Spirit
the father is referring to god
son is Jesus Christ
holy spirit is the enabler of christian life

The trinity is not so much a visual symbol as it is a spiritual symbol that all catholics possess it is everywhere and is with everyone that believes in the trinity
This spiritual symbol represent the holy trinity with us and all around us... god his son Jesus and the holy ghost is with us spiritual everyday and is waiting to be called on when needed. Most symbols of the trinity are represented in the form of three rings one for each member of the trinity and can be found in almost every catholic church in the form of stained glass windows. Also the trinity was created by the catholic church for its followers to be able to talked to all 3 beings at once the reason for this is they thought that evil would not be able to pass through the trinity

JESUS

After the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, many of his followers scattered and went underground. His apostles and closest disciples were fulfilled by the Holy Spirit and set out to preach the Gospel of Jesus. Persecution of those who believed that Jesus was Christ, the Christians had to go underground, and it became necessary for Christians to identify one another through the use of symbols. One of the most well known was the symbols of the fish. This fish symbols has been found by archaeologists in caves and catacombs that were used as meeting places. It has been found in markings of graves and even in dwelling places. It was a symbol that was recognized by other true followers but not by those who were not. Why the fish you might ask?
There are several interesting theories surrounding the use of the fish. First off, Jesus preached primarily in Galilee, a fishing town. Many of His first chosen apostles were fishermen, including Simon Peter to whom he entrusted the keys of the church. Jesus who taught in parables, told his disciples he would make the “fishers of men”.

Every time I see the symbol of a fish on someones bumper sticker I think of the story of Jesus turning four loafs of bread and a couple of fish into enough food and feeding hundreds of people. This symbol is probably the second largest symbol of Christianity the first being the cross. This symbol is important to me because it is a symbol the represent Jesus in a more positive and happier way then the crucifix. This symbol is still a symbol of to identify Christians just as it was back when christian were being persecuted.

Another symbol of Jesus is the crucifix.. the crucifix is usually only found in catholic churches and has a powerful meaning to all.

The crucifix is simply a symbol, but a powerful one. It is a reminder of Christ’s suffering for our sin. this symbol is important to all Christians because Jesus sacrificed for us.. this is a admiration shown by Christ is how he has show his love for everyone that believes in him and his father. In most church the letters above the crucifix meaning the "king of Jews" was put there by the Romans upon crucifying Jesus. The difference between a cross and a crucifix is that most christian churches have a cross above the alter but catholic churches have a crucifix. The reason for this is a crucifix symbol is much more meaningful... Jesus shown hanging on the cross with his hands and feet nailed with the crown of thorns on top his head shown just how much pain and anguish Jesus had to go through to save his followers.

HOLY SPIRIT
Bernini's alabaster window in St. Peter's Basilica depicts the Holy Spirit as a dove, common in Christian art, referencing John the Baptist's proclamation that he saw the Holy Spirit descend upon Jesus at his baptism in the form of a dove.

"When Christ comes up from the water of his baptism, the Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove, comes down upon him and remains with him". Matthew 3:16

The dove with a olive branch in foot is a symbol of peace, but more the dove is gentle symbol that involves the holy spirit. the dove portrayed like the one in this stained glass window is represented in many other catholic church in the world. this symbol to me is very important because it give me a sense of relief that the holy spirit is every present and all knowing. the dove is a beautiful symbol and couldn't be anymore perfect to be the symbol of the holy spirit.

"Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come." Matthew 12:33
this passage from the bible represent how the holy spirit is in the highest regards within the catholic church.. it shows the God will forgive anyone that takes god or Jesus name in vein but will not forgive if you take the holy spirits name in vein. this is also why the dove in the early years of Christianity was considered to be sacred.

Monstrance

You may have been in a Catholic church during Adoration or Benediction and wondered what that golden vessel that holds the Eucharistic Host "the bread wafer" for display is called. It’s a unique Roman Catholic symbol called a Monstrance. In the Latin language used universally in the Roman Catholic Church it is called an Ostensorium. Monstrance is derived from the Latin word monstrare which means “to show”. In the English language the word demonstrate has the same derivation and it’s meaning, according to the Webster Dictionary, is “to show clearly”.So why do Catholics have this special vessel to show or display the Eucharistic host? In the Catholic Church, doctrine holds that the bread and wine are transformed into the actual body and blood of Jesus Christ during their consecration at the mass. This is known as Transubstantiation - the transforming of the bread and wine into the body and blood. Once consecrated and transformed they are given the same adoration as is given to Jesus. While the Host is displayed in the Monstrance no human hands are to touch it. That’s why you see the priest or bishop or even the pope wearing a veil that covers their shoulders and hands when holding the Monstrance.

This is a special time in mass when you receive the body and blood of Christ the monstrance symbol is the most sacred in the catholic church. this part of church represent the last supper between Jesus and his disciples when Jesus gave up his body and blood to his disciples and said "take this all of you and eat from it.. and drink from it for this is my body and blood the everlasting covenant." these word from the priest is special it put everything into relation from Christ dying on the cross and giving up his body to save us from our sins. the monstrance goes undetected by most catholic but is one that has special meaning through the monstrance is when priest converts bread into the actual body of Christ.

POPE - PAPACY

The crossed keys symbolise the keys of The Kingdom of Heaven entrusted to Simon Peter, the foundational and immovable (rock) "living stone" upon which The Church was built.

The triple crown (the tiara) representents the pope's three functions as supreme pastor, supreme teacher and supreme priest. The gold cross on a monde (globe) surmounting the tiara symbolizes the sovereignty of Jesus.

The papacy was giving to peter by Christ and was the first pope. Peter was crucified upside down because his belief in Christianity he was upside down because he believe that it would show disrespect to Jesus if he was crucified the way Jesus was.Unlike all of the other symbol that I have shown can be found in all most every Catholic church the the crossed keys and triple crown of the papacy can only be found in the Vatican where the pope resides. The papacy symbol is very special and sacred for this symbol means through the popes teaching is the way to the kingdom of heaven represented in the crossed keys the papacy gives meaning to every catholic it might be the literal focal point in our religion this symbol give meaning to everything that is holy and good and inspires Catholic to follow Jesus path.

This final project has brought me closer to my religion through research and the process of writing this and there were many things that I have learned through Geertz definition and looking more closely to the symbol that are within every religion... and I thank you for that Professor Smith.

this video i found on YouTube i was just looking for anything for this weeks open blog and i stumbled on this video and i really like it. if i could have made this video for our visual blog it would have been perfect . i like how the combined the people interviews with the sideshow of picture. it was well made.

this video puts religion into perspective.. they use the word compassion alot... and it fits appropriately with the message that the a trying to get across to the world. no matter what religion a person is or what race compassion and tolerance for one another is what will bring the world together in harmony. they also talk about the Golden rule "treat other how you want to be treated" if everyone did this we would have no problems. i understand the is a high reaching goal and it is most likely never to happen. but if you are to reach for a goal might as well reach for the top instead of doing only half.

also i was having a discussion with someone else and i showed them this video he commented by saying would you have compassion for extreme religion that kill people for their religion. and that question is tuffy at this point I'm not sure of how to deal with that so i will as that question to who ever reads this what would you do

a new religion

Our biography of Baha'ullah details the life of a man who would become the founder for of the Bahia. By the end of chapter 4 we see that there is a group known as the Bahia's. Write about what you see as the elements that go into founding a new religion.. Is it a sudden change or a long process? What is the relationship with past religions? What is the importance of a founder?

the process of establishing a religion doesn't happen over night the Bahia's went through many changes in location from Iraq to turkey Istanbul edime then to Egypt. i think that Bahia's had trouble finding and establishing a location because they wanted to find a place where people and their culture accept their beliefs. as far as what is needed to found a new religion is usually turmoil or discomfort in a set of belief that have taking place in a culture or society and a person or group of people want reform or change. this reminds me of happy feet where change and reform was not accepted by others. hence why the change in so many venues occurred until a place is found where the religion can be accepted and flourish.

this video gave my a better understanding of Baha'ullah and the basis for Bahia religion i better understand how difficult it was for him to do this spending most of his time in exile and trying to start this fascinating new religion. the ways that people sacrifice in life for what they believe in is an extraordinary when he could of gave up and gone home he persevered and pushed through that is a true testimony to ones character
watch this video it gave me goose bumps

Being a person who has strong conservative beliefs, abortion is a legitimate topic to talk about for this weeks open blog. I, myself, would never have an abortion with my significant other. The embryo is a living being and that would be murder. I do not think that couples that choose to have an abortion really think about what they are doing. They are missing out on a child, a son or daughter. That is their child and they deserve it to them to raise it to the best of their ability. At the very least, if they do not want to raise it, put the baby up for adoption so it will have the opportunity to live with a family that will raise it as if it was there own. Think of the friends that you have who were adopted. They would not be around if their parents would have had an abortion. Don't have sex if you are not willing to accept the responsibility of a child. I feel that is simple enough to understand. Yes it is wrong to make it a law to ban abortions, but I feel this is more of a moral issue. It is their conscious that this is going to be weighing on. I just say think about the child before you do anything. Think about the joy that child could be bringing you. This all goes back to the religion I believe in and how I was raised. All of us would not be here if our parents decided not to keep us.

this is a side note...... sorry if you don't like it.. i don't care....check out this video i know it might not be appropriate... but none the less it is funny.... haaaa haaaa haaa haaa. i know in the rasifarian culture is cool to smoke weed but.. at the same time i dont view a religion to promote those sort of things. honestly if your 12 year old kid.. says hey mom i want to be Rastafarian.. and the kid is sitting in his living room rolling a joint and then smokes it....... is that a religion that you would let your child have..

don't take this out of contexts and I'm trying to hypocritical, sorry if i offended anyone.

the video was very different from what i expected.. comparing it to bob Marley. for instance they wake up at 3 in the morning that is a little different. i don't believe Marley would enjoy that also it seem that they are more conservative than the normal Rastafarian belief. comparing the people in this video to Marley it would seem that they are much more traditional then the norm. also the bible passages or the bible lessons on the trees to remind the people as they walk the village is also unique.

the system of symbols in this video include what they wear as turbine the clothing solid and colors red green black and gold. also they smoke the ganja for meditation purposes. a couple of interesting things in this video they talk about black supremacy and they show a sign that says black over white good over evil... i don't take this symbol literally for all circumstances but you cant have equality for all people (another one of their signs) if you don't except all races. more so then not the Rastafarian religion shown in this video is very spiritual and there is nothing wrong with a religion that has a strong traditional background and does not harm other people that religion is good for human kind

bob marley

Robert Nesta Marley was born on Feb 1945 in a small village of nine mile in the saint Ann parish. Bob Marley was face with racial discrimination as a young child because his father was a white English Jamaican and mother was a black Jamaican, but a perfect quote by bob Marley reflecting on his mix racial orgins.

"I don't have prejudice against meself. My father was a white and my mother was black. Them call me half-caste or whatever. Me don't dip on nobody's side. Me don't dip on the black man's side nor the white man's side. Me dip on God's side, the one who create me and cause me to come from black and white"

Bob Marley religion was Rastafarian whose culture was tied to reggae a type of music that bob Marley played with a group called the wailers. the Exodus album that the produced was voted the #1 album in the 20th century. Marley was a deeply religious Rastafarian and there is nothing wrong with that ...but his love for his religion also could have killed him also. Marley had a malignant melanoma caused by a broadcaster on his right toe.. Marley could have had his toe amputated but it was against his religion Rastafarian's believed the body had to be "whole" Marley sought for voodoo type of treatment but the didn't work and 3 year later Marley died that last words were to his son.."money cant buy life".

http://www.kingsolomonsgate.com/images/GezerSheba.jpg according to this website this is the first archaeological proof of the bible... proving that the stories are true.

Queen Sheba heard about King Solomon and his fame and fortune and wisdom that Solomon possessed so she went to listen to him speak and fine out for herself if what she heard was true. so she went to his kingdom and made several trip as did king Solomon. finally king asked her to stay at his house for awhile, but the made truce that the kind would not take her by force (virginity) and the king replied as to say as long as you do not steal from my house. well one evening the king prepared a feast to make the queen thirsty at night and as the queen searched for water the king "found her stealing water" so the truce was off and the slept together result in a son (Menelik).

in Ethiopia at this time women were not aloud to "know men" lost virginity so she was not able to still be queen but that was fine to her as long as the thrown stayed in her blood line and it did starting with Menelik.

this story in significant because it give the nation a starting point of king starting with Menelik this is important because I'm sure many Ethiopian can related to this part of history.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conceptual_blending this link may help you understand conceptual blending and its background

Gilles Fauconnier describe conceptual blending by using metaphors and many short stories. the two that i liked the most are a clippers ship that sail in in the 1800's and a catamaran ship that is sailing the same course as the clipper ship but in 1993 and it is a race between the past and present. the other is a ski instructor teaching a beginner how to ski and uses metaphors to help the student learn to ski.. the metaphors is being a waiter and having a tray of croissants in one hand and in the other a plate of champagne theses metaphors are to teach the student the correct balance and position of his arms.. Gilles is using metaphors to enhance our thought process and creative thinking which in turn gives us meaning to the way we think feel and the activities in our life.

while Gilles does not talked about religion in conceptual blending it can offer tie that link the two things together. for example in church the a priest reads a story from the bible and uses metaphors to relay the example to the congregation he does this because he probably know more and understands the bible and how to interpret better than the people in church but more so he uses metaphors to help the people understand the bible and what God is trying to teach us or how he wants use to live our lives. there are metaphors everywhere in the bible. for example Noah's arc might have not have happened exactly the way it is in the bible but a lesson for people to read and understand how god want use to act or guide line for how we should act the like in the baseball field example what is considered out of bounds

religion vs religion

this is a great discussion about religion between two people that couldn't be farther apart on the political scale.... both have have a solid argument about religion...

i don't agree with bill maher about the idea the science and rationality should persuade us more the religious belief but i can say that i do agree when bill talks about religion is a bureaucracy with man...
one more thing bill says well if you were born in pakastan that you wouldnt be rasied christan. that point to me is very true and interesting becuase in christianity you must believe in god and jesus christ to be accepted in heave but what about religions that believe in a god but not the same god i believe in... that question is deep and must be hard to answer it may take a life time for me to have a rational answer but maybe someone else can help me

but i think that religion is a community where people can come together and everyone believe in a basic idea of a certain religion and that it does have a purpose in today society and hopefully in the future too.. i cant imagine when I'm 70 years old and more people believe in Scientology over Protestant or Catholicism that to me would be disappointing but we will see

here is another web site of bill maher on religionhttp://tr.truveo.com/Bill-Maher%E2%80%99s-Views-on-Religion/id/1033451638

St. Augustine, tranlations and Psalms

in book 2 Augustine talks about signs in heaven and earth he also writes about three main signs of knowledge holiness and fear and all three work together. He says "the fear of God is the beginning of all knowledge". Augustine also talks about the signs being literal and metaphorical. also that knowledge is for the teachers and how they can reveal meaning to the students. also people should not seek personal satisfaction of any kind that they should seek satisfaction in God and if you don't punishment will come to you.
In book 2 of St Augustine's on christian teaching, Augustine writes about translation and how it can be different from a certain language. for example in the Latin language a person must be educated in the origin of Latin and Greek. also in Latin it is difficult to translate from single words and in word phrases. for the average Joe it its very difficult to use Augustine teaching to interpret the Psalms because the majority of the people do not know Latin, but if more people did understand the origin of the languages in the translation maybe more people would understand it more... but that maybe a hard task

I do not understand why there are people out there who believe that religion is a waste of time and that it does not serve a pupose. For those atheists, I do not think that have noticed that the majority of people in our world believe in some higher power. Religion gives people something else to believe in. Sometimes there are things that happen that we just cannot explain. Religion is there to fill the gap so people do not go insane with trying to figure it out. Religions are here to help us from reaching our breaking points and keep us from becoming socially unacceptable. Back in high school, my school's all state track star was killed by a drunk driver. How does this happen to such an innocent good person. Or another instance, my ex-girlfriend's mom has had three different types of cancer over the past five years. Why and how does this keep happening to such a nice woman. These are the questions that just cannot be answered. So through religion I believe that everything happens for a purpose. God has a plan for everyone.

in psalm 18 David is asking god to protect him from his enemies (a rock to hid behind). Also David ask god for help because his enemies are coming for David and when god answers David god comes down and destroys the enemies of David. the reason why god answers David call is that David is righteous his hands are clean he obeyed the rules of the god and did no evil and did not turn away from God. then David talks about how everything that he owns come from god that god gave him nations to rule because David is pure and believed in god and because of this god made David king to rule over these nation that god gave him. the image of god in this psalm reminds me of the cliche god is fire and brimstone. but i do not see anything wrong with this portrayel of god. i believe that god created us and has the right to do what he pleases with us. and if u look closely towards the end of the psalm you will see other people crying out for gods help but he does not reply because not everyone recives gods help if u look in the new testiment in the bookof mathew Remember the words of Jesus: Not everyone that calls me Lord will go to heaven. Only those that obey my Father (God)

i always read this poem when life is hard, maybe it can help you also

here are the words to this poem..

One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.
Sometimes there were two sets of footprints,
other times there were one set of footprints.

This bothered me because I noticed
that during the low periods of my life,
when I was suffering from
anguish, sorrow or defeat,
I could see only one set of footprints.

So I said to the Lord,
"You promised me Lord,
that if I followed you,
you would walk with me always.
But I have noticed that during
the most trying periods of my life
there have only been one
set of footprints in the sand.
Why, when I needed you most,
you have not been there for me?"

The Lord replied,
"The times when you have
seen only one set of footprints in the sand,
is when I carried you."
Mary Stevenson

Sometimes i find myself questioning whether there is a God or if i believe in him. Sometime i feel ashamed of myself but other times it is granted that i question God. i don't think that God would be mad at someone that questions him i almost think that he might encourage it.
In philosophy class we are talking about God and free will and whether they exist or don't or if one or the other exist. from the philosophy point of view we haven't come up with a definitive answer yet .. go figure.. also we talked about whether God is omnipotent and wholly good and that evil exists. the problem with that is that if evil exists then good is not wholly good and if God is omnipotent and can do anything why doesn't he prevent evil. well my solution to this would be that God is omnipotent but chooses when he is and when he is not. and yes there is evil but it is not because God in not wholly good it is because God let his people have a choice in life its called free will.so to relate it back to this poem i hope who ever reads this blog and ever has doubt in God read this poem and maybe the light will shine through.

if you want a copy of this poem here is a websitehttp://www.footprints-inthe-sand.com/index.php?page=Poem/Poem.php

http://www.easyenglish.info/psalms/psalm002-taw.htm
I was doin some reasearch on psalm 2 and i ran across this funny almost stupid link that broke down psalm 2 into parts so that people i guess can understand it check it out, maybe you wont find it as weird as i do.

I noticed that the earlier version rhymed and had kind of poetic flow almost like a song. In order for the earlier version to rhyme the translation must have been altered. I think reason for this version rhyming it was more appealing or easier to understand and also like more modern day Christians it is kind of like a hymn. Also in class we talked about how religions sang or played song: maybe brought the community together this could also be a reason why this version had a rhyme or poetic feel to it.also i noticed the lack of quotations in this version compared to Alters version to me the quotations are telling me who is talking even though i have a good idea of who is talking.
I think that Psalm 2 was translated the way it was in the Bay Psalm Book as a way for early Americans to understand and maybe somehow find a way to relate to it, like for example "Let us asunder break their bands, their cords bee from us throwne" could be in relation toward how the settlers were breaking away from British rule thus why they came to the Americas. this might be far fetched but also in the wording in the two different versions in the bay of psalm he uses the words "heathen" in the other version "nations" is used now back in 1640 when book was published the Pilgrims were fighting with the native Americans which were heathens a person that does not believe in Christianity so that is another way how the early american could relate

You know, it amazes me that there are religious wars in our world. I really just do not understand why they happen. I also wonder if those involve realize that until or if it ever happens that a real "God" is found that the killings are going to continue. Palestine and Israel have been going on with their religious fight for way too long. The only thing that is going to happen is that more people are going to die and the fight will continue to rage on. I just do not understand how people could kill just because someone else does not believe in the same thing they do. Religions are there to give people something to believe in. They give them a way of dealing with the things they cannot explain or cannot deal with. But i do understand that people with a religious background do fight in wars, but i assume there a fighting the war for other reason than not agreeing with the oppositions beliefs, instead for reason like being patriotic or a draft.

effigy mounds and the "system of symbols"

Effigy mounds in wisconsin are very unique and mysterious, yet they are a "system of symbols" to native american and people today. To me there are many "system of symbols" that the woodland people interject with there belief system. for example many effigy mounds are near large areas of wetlands and springs and other natural features that have spirtual meaning. These symbols such as water resource have an abundence of waterfowl and animal that live near theses watershed like beavers, mink, turtles deer and bear which many of the mounds were made from and also water spirit or panther. Also effigy mounds in wisconsin are regarded as belief system encoded on woodland pottery and art work from the woodland people that reflect the social divison that exsited with the people that lived in the effigy mound region. To me theses effigy mound were a corralation between life and the after life, where the woodland people came to celebrate life even if "life" is referring to death too. A qoute from the book that says it better, "the effigy mounds can be considered as areas of social reporduction; places to which people returned again and again for the pupose of life-way reinforcment and renewal." I beleive that these system of symbols from where the mound are formed to what shape they are formed into are all "conception of a general order of existance"

i went to holy rosary catholic school on the east side of flint MI from pre-school to 8th grade. the school has a long history of great sports teams and a outstanding parish. and i am very sad to here that the school is closing. some much has changed since my days at the school. when i was in first grade i can remember having over 40 kids in our class and in 8th grade that number reduce to 30. now in most classes the highest number of people in any grade in 16 and that's in a kindergarten class. i understand that flints economy has suffered greatly in the past ten years but i am still try to understand why the enrolment has drop of 80 percent in the last 3 years. i don't think that it has to do with money either I think that many people have stopped practicing Catholicism to me that is a shame. i recently read an article in the new york times that the number of religion have lost many people to the fact that they have stopped practicing and the number of atheist rose to of 15 percent. i have a hard time understanding this i take great pride in calling myself a catholic and when i have children i want them to be catholic also. hopefully the school is doing a massive fundraiser to stay open for a few more year but i hope that people step up in the community and support this school like they have supported our community for over 60 years GO WOLVERINES

Paleolithic art and religion

For your inaugural blog read the chapter on "Paleolithic Art and Religion" and take a virtual tour of the Cave of Lascaux, then from your impressions of these write about what you see as the primary element of religion. Your thoughts should in some way respond to our readings..

this paper was very interesting even though i thought it was dificult to follow. i'm not sure if i belive that the cave art was a form of religion or some sort of spiritual belief of the cro Mangnons. i cant make up my mind off just one article but i can say that it seems to be far fetched. take for example most religions have a high being or many high beings ex greek gods. these painting dont seem to show that. one could argue that the higher being is animals that may be a valid point but i would think that they would focus on one or just a couple specific type of animal. another point to make is, in the article it talks about different cultures burying thier dead , to me that is a religious ritual but they dont have it in any paintings, i think they bury the dead not for a religious aspect but just to remeber the dead
as far as what would be the primary element of religion it would have to be the art but im having a hard time swallowing it. although i asked my self is the sistine chapel related to religion i would say yes, so i could understand how one could see that the paleolithic art can be tied to religion
